Brockton high school and middle school students won a national drone competition, beating teams fielded by private schools, prep schools and wealthy suburban districts, according to Cedric Turner, executive director and founder of Empower Yourself, the Brockton-based organization that helps run the teams.
“We were outspent by a lot,” Turner said.
The Brockton team typically paid between $2,500 to $5,000 for each drone, he said, with other teams paying three times that.
But, according to Turner, the other teams didn’t have an answer to the knowledge and experience of two Brockton high school students in particular: Henry Ani, captain, and Julian Melendez, pilot.
