Three Brockton middle school students who battled broken equipment, team turnover and months of lost preparation time won a national drone competition this spring, emerging as yet another success story from a local STEM program focused on creating career opportunities for kids from Brockton.
“Literally every single break [between competition events], we worked until we could fly again,” Dylen Carvalho-Pereira, 14, said. “One point, it got so desperate that we put cardboard on” the claw attached to the bottom of the drone, which picks up objects, one of the challenges at the competition.
The victory came in the first year the Aerospace Robotics Competition included a middle school division. This fall, Dylen and his team members Alex Perez-Pena and Peter Hout will join Brockton High’s nationally acclaimed drone team, following a pipeline organizers say helps students discover career opportunities in engineering and aviation.
